Photofusion / Deepthi Muralibabu

Every year, Photofusion (the photographic resource centre based in South London) puts on an exhibition for its members called Salon.

Then, from these members, a panel of judges go on to choose 4 photographers to exhibit in a smaller show, which is called Select. This smaller show gives the photographers the chance to flesh out how they exhibit the work seen in Salon.

A few years ago, I had the privilege of being in the Salon show and also being chosen to exhibit in the Select show! It was a great experience. Now this year, 2026, I am back again at Photofusion but this time as one of the judges tasked with choosing a photographer. The photographer I chose is Deepti Muralibabu for her work Kulam.

Taken from Deepthis website, “Kulam explores how women in my family navigate space, gender, and memory. Their annual return to our ancestral village becomes an intimate act of remembering, loss, and quiet resilience homeward.” I was drawn to this as my own practice revolves around familial narratives, and the images had a quiet power to them. As judges, we had to write a few words about what attracted us to the work; here are mine.

Multicoloured clothes hanging outside in the sun to dry.

The backs of two women stood next to each other looking out, sharing a moment.

A sense of the familiar, but different.

Nostalgia?

A lack of the male gaze.

When I saw this work, these are some of the thoughts that spread across my mind. Then I realised that I want to see more, and I believe there is more here to be explored. I am excited to see what that looks like.’

This post is just to highlight Deepti’s work, because I think it’s worth a look.
