Proud Family

This is a video of my family and friends around the kitchen table at my mum’s house, Easter 2025. I love my family and I’m proud of them, even though they drive me crazy. The way I cuss at them and cuss about them, you may think I wasn’t, but I am. We are a Black British, working-class family from south London, and there is a lot that comes with that. Nonetheless, my family are some of the warmest and most welcoming people I know, and I mean that sincerely.

I am also honest about my family, with their flaws and the dynamics within it. For example, being the only one in my immediate family to study the arts, I often feel separate from them, as though they don't understand me and what I do. I also know I don't necessarily give them the chance to understand me. I can isolate myself and not be very involved, these are things to work on, I guess.

So, what does this have to do with photography? Well, I am constantly trying to figure out how and what I want to be known for and what I want to spend my time shooting. Should I be emulating what I see on social media, or should I be taking inspiration from elsewhere, from all the photographers I learned about while studying? What will help my career? Help me make money?

Who knows, but what I do know is that when I think about the work that makes me happy, this is it, and that has to count for something.
